It’s simple, but the principle of a hole stretches across engineering. We attempted to create clay beads with holes through them (subtractive manufacturing). These will air dry hard in 24 hours. Special spaghetti was threaded through a colinder. They also threaded foam cutouts which the children had punched holes in using a hole punch. A wooden block with holes showed children the nature of screws and bolts. We used a sieve “hour glass” to sort beads, replicating how some semiconductors are manufactured. The inclusion of Art was intentional in this STEAM experience.
