Corn kernels were the object of study today. Mini corn was 60X magnified to show the step between the original corn, which was a grass, and modern corn cultivated by indigenous Americans. Grocery store corn was shucked while counting and observed for bugs (we didn’t find any). Husk and silk art was encouraged. We used gas bubbles in chemical reactions to make kernels dance in carbonated water. In the domain of sensory experience, we mixed oil and corn flour to make a kinetic sand. To add a smell and taste experience, we microwave-popped kernels using a scale to figure out the percent of popped corn, 84%, and it was quickly eaten.
